A lava rock-based biofilter for the treatment of alpha-pinene [An article from: Bioresource Technology]

You can view it with any web browser.Description: Biofiltration is an emerging technology in the United States that utilizes microorganisms to biodegrade harmful contaminants in air to carbon dioxide and water. Biofiltration is not only more cost effective, but also more environmentally friendly than traditional technologies such as thermal oxidation and chemical scrubbing. The primary objectives of the study were to operate a lava rock-based laboratory biofiltration system for the removal of alpha-pinene. A consortium of microorganisms to be used as an inoculum was recovered that was able to use alpha-pinene as a sole source of carbon and energy. The removal of alpha-pinene from the laboratory system was monitored with a total hydrocarbon analyzer (THA). Based on THA analysis, elimination capacities as high as 100+g/m^3/h were obtained in the laboratory biofilters. Removal efficiencies averaged 99% over a two year period. The solid support maintained a neutral pH with no buffer addition throughout the two year study and microbial levels were maintained between 10^6 and 10^7 colony forming units (CFU)/g of solid support. Bacillus and Rhodococcus species were found to be the majority of the microorganisms in the biofilters over a two year period. This is the first time an organism from either of these genera has been reported to utilize alpha-pinene as a sole source of carbon and energy. Overall, a preselected consortium of microorganisms coupled with lava rock as a biofilter solid support achieved extended alpha-pinene treatment levels that far exceed previously published values.

Rather than limit multimedia's creative locus to individuals working with a small range of tools/instruments, we address the increasing dispersion of productive processes across communities, technologies, and spaces. New media culture has reached a point where one can compose on a laptop, sample, loop, and create mashups and heretofore-unknown musics. These developments indicate that contemporary re/mix/digital music culture offers vocabularies, models, and practices for new media writing and culture generations beyond the tradition of text-based composition or the singular work of art. The article traces a genealogy from Wagner's notion of the ''total art work'' up to contemporary digital/remix to show how new media extend techniques that have long been developing. Just as the dispersion of production across communities and technologies transforms musical aesthetics, so also the aesthetic experience itself changes. New media culture is less resonant with interpretation than with engagement, and to explain this experiential difference the article develops the concepts of ''worlding'' and ''prosumer.'' Additionally, this article considers musical and multimedia attempts to incorporate new input streams, including those too often categorized (and excluded) as noise. Such input streams, in combination with other feedback-driven and distributed forms of production, can be theorized as part of an expansive, immersive, and experiential approach to new media we articulate as worlding.

You can view it with any web browser.Description: Archaeomagnetic dating of samples from a brick kiln discovered at Dogmersfield Park has been achieved using both field direction and intensity. Detailed rock-magnetic properties and microwave archaeointensities have already been studied and published elsewhere [Ll. Casas, J. Shaw, M. Gich, J.A. Share, High-quality microwave archaeointensity determinations from an early 18th century brick kiln, Geophys. J. Int. 161 (2005) 653-661]. The archaeomagnetic measurements were assigned time-probability distributions by comparing with predictions from a global model at the sampling site, this procedure suppresses errors arising from relocation to a common central reference location. All three probability distributions consistently indicate the same age (~AD 1700). Once the probability distributions are combined a narrower probability distribution is obtained, stressing the importance of pursuing combined (directional and intensity) archaeomagnetic analyses. The inferred age is also highly consistent with available historical evidence.
