In a dark futuristic world literature reading and independent thought have been outlawed. The government has gone so far as to employ a special league of firemen to burn all books on sight. But when one otherwise obedient fireman Oskar Werner meets an intriguing revolutionary Julie Christie she provokes him to question the legitimacy of his actions. Tensions mount when he blatantly transgresses the very laws he's employed to enforce and his terrified wife becomes an informant. Because the subject of censorship seems to be perpetually contemporary one can argue that the significant social impact of FAHRENHEIT 451 will forever be current. Franois Truffaut's film is based on the best-selling novel by Ray Bradbury.

Don Siegel's cult masterpiece interpreted as an allegory of both McCarthyism and Communism is undoubtedly one of the screen's most disturbing evocations of paranoia. It stars Kevin McCarthy as Dr. Miles Binnell a physician whose traumatized arrival in the emergency room of a San Francisco hospital leads the staff to believe he's lost his mind. In a series of flashbacks he unwinds a bizarre account of his last few days. After his return from a trip to rural Santa Mira his nurse Sally Jean Willes explains that his office has been flooded with patients who have made appointments yet never appeared. Former girlfriend Becky Driscoll Dana Wynter tells him that she's unable to rid herself of the belief that the man claiming to be her uncle is an impostor. A hysterical young boy refuses to return home claiming that his mother is not his mother. Miles's concern over this pattern of incidents temporarily allayed by some jargon from the town psychiatrist is newly aroused when he gets a phone call from friend Jack Belice

This fantasy adventure is based on the 1870 novel by Jules Verne. A small motley group of soldiers and civilians flee the 1865 siege of Richmond via a hot air balloon and end up on an isolated island crawling with over-sized crabs birds and bees. Even more astonishing they discover three other humans inhabiting the island: two shipwrecked women and the illustrious long-lost Captain Nemo. Ray Harryhausen's special effects which include a battle with a giant crab and abduction by an enormous bird still have the power to thrill and amaze.
