A parody of the much-done medieval English tale of Robin Hood and his Merry Men ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS also directly lampoons the politically correct ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES which starred the hearthrob of the time the very un-British Kevin Costner. English hearthrob Cary Elwes gets a turn in the role of the hero of Sherwood Forest who robs from the rich to give to the poor when he returns from the Crusades to find his beloved King Richard Patrick Stewart in an amazing Sean Connery imitation usurped by the evil Prince John Richard Lewis and his henchman the Sheriff of Rottingham Roger Rees. In typical Brooks fashion there is much satire some gross jokes a dash of screwball farce and a Jewish spin put on gentile characters: Hence Friar Tuck is transformed into Rabbi Tuckman Mel Brooks who is eager to perform circumcisions on the dim-witted Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House

It all begins when a darling smart New York City couple played winningly by Cary Grant and Myrna Loy decide it's time pack up their two girls and leave their jaded tiny Manhattan dwelling to build a dreamy get away in rural Connecticut. This bright comedy directed by H.C. Potter and produced by RKO goes on to explore in detail the harsh realities of keeping their dream alive. Not only are the Blandings besieged with local tradesman who keep upping their rates but Cary Grant's character Jim is under a deadline to come up for a slogan to sell ham for his add agency and could potentially lose his job. Under stress he begins to suspect his wife is secretly in love with their friend and lawyer Bill Cole. Eventually the decision to build a home outlives all logic and ends happily. The script which is based on a novel by Eric Hodgins is sly and confident and the performances are fast and light making this middle-class adventure intrinsically American.

Down Periscope

Kelsey Grammar plays a wayward Navy officer Tom Dodge who is notorious throughout the Navy for having responded to a close call involving a Russian submarine by getting drunk and tattooing "welcome aboard" on an unmentionable appendage. He gets assigned by Admiral Winslow Rip Torn to command his own submarine; unfortunately this sub is a rusting 1958 diesel model that the Navy wants to engage in war games to find out if it could inflict any damage. The assumption is this sub is comparable to those the Russians are selling to renegade Iraqi and Libyan commanders who might use them on suicide missions against the US. Once on board we meet the cast of quirky characters who will man this clunker including a hyper mutinous Rob Schneider as second in command Harland Williams as the copulating whale-impersonating radar operater Sonar and Lauren Holly as the token female officer.
