Ibiza Sunset, Vol. 2

*Est. $19.99 Compare

Ibiza Sunset is the second volume in a series of ambient mix discs inspired by rave locations around the world. This edition is derived from one of the two most famous scenes in the world, Ibiza (the other is Goa). Drawing from ambient sounds of 2000 vintage, Rob Da Bank blends ultraclean electronic ambiences laced together with slow-throb grooves. Ibizarre's dreamy "Cap D'es Falco" captures a sensual sunset with its vaguely Latin groove, celesta refrain, and spoken Spanish phrases. Rune Lindbank's "Sondags Beste" effects smooth jazz ambiences without being smarmy, while Cantoma goes into a deep, lush trance groove on "Pan de Jero." The lightweight R&B of "A Man Called Adam" doesn't seem to fit in, despite the Bahian candombl? beat, but it doesn't detract much either before sliding into Cousin Grizzly's swampy dub groove, "Lady Grizelda." Rob Da Bank's mix is pleasing, but doesn't quite have the dramatic arc that would make this a compelling journey instead of just a nice collection. --John Diliberto
