Wolf: Italienisches Liederbuch (Italian Songbook)
Internationally-renowned German baritone Christian Gerhaher returns with one of the most sophisticated song cycles of the Late Romantic era: the 46 sensuous and poetic miniatures of Hugo Wolf's "Italian Songbook." This rarely heard cycle is compared to a miniature opera, calling for two singing actors to bring the text and melodies to life. Gerhaher is joined by the young German soprano Mojca Erdmann, scheduled for her Metropolitan Opera debut later this year, as well as pianist Gerold Huber for one of the most unique and lush sets of songs in the entire Romantic repertoire. In the space of just a few years, Christian Gerhaher has turned into one of the leading singers of his generation. His exemplary lied recordings with Gerold Huber have been highly acclaimed, including the 2006 Gramophone Award for their Schubert album, Abendbilder. In 2009, he not only received the BBC Music Award but also the "Echo Klassik" as Singer of the year for his Schumann recording, Melancholy. For his operatic work, Gerhaher was voted "Best Singer of the Year 2010 " by the magazine Opernwelt.
