Stage Diving

*Est. $103.22 Compare

Stage Diving, taped at Manhattan's Bottom Line, showcases this guitar-strumming singer/songwriter without his long-time band (though he drafts the unsuspecting drummer of the opening act for two songs). The album includes such long-time fan favorites as "Woman with the Strength of 10,000 Men," "Tremble," and "Flown This Acid World," songs marked by the ambitious psychological and spiritual themes of his father-in-law, Bob Dylan. If Stage Diving explains the passion of Himmelman's following, it also demonstrates why that following is unlikely to grow. Though his lyrics are ambitious, his language is often banal; he constantly refers to vague, clich?d abstractions like "dreams" that "are frozen like a river" or "left out in the rain [and] gone to rust." --Geoffrey Himes

Concert for Peace

*Est. $6.96 Compare

International pop star and European parliamentarian Nana Mouskouri is a living monument to the notion of "middle of the road." Greek folk music, Italian opera, French chanson, light classicism, and many other styles all come together in a vocal franchise (more than 200 million copies of her albums sold). On Concert for Peace, recorded in New York's St. John's Cathedral with the assistance of orchestra and chorus, the square-spectacled soprano sings in half a dozen languages and puts Beethoven, Bizet, Andrew Lloyd Weber, and even gospel great Mahalia Jackson through the homogenizer in the name of--you guessed it--peace. While her squeaky-clean voice may not soar as powerfully as in the past (whose does?), Mouskouri remains the Great Comforter of the international pop style. --Richard Gehr
