Licensed to Ill

*Est. $4.99 Compare

The joke of Licensed to Ill's cover--that the Beasties could crash their jet into the side of a mountain and keep on tickin'--serves as a good metaphor for a career that even some of their 1986 admirers thought might be over after the one-time-only shock of this full-length debut. That thousands of funk-junkie wannabes have since failed at re-creating its groove, breaking-the-law vibe, and ear-splitting mix of rock and rap is an even better joke. And funniest of all is the record itself, which packs dexterous boasts, aural puns, and lots and lots of yelling into a disc that can still be listened to with as much pleasure as it gave in '86. --Rickey Wright

Roxanne Shante's Greatest Hits

*Est. $11.98 Compare

This compilation comprises five tracks from Shanté's uneven debut Bad Sister, six from her merciless sequel, The Bitch Is Back, plus an over-produced new song and the deathless hit single, "Roxanne's Revenge," teenage Lolita Gooden's smart-ass riposte to U.T.F.O.'s "Roxanne, Roxanne." Shanté has attitude in her veins, and nobody else can come up with a dis as devastating as hers. When she turns her attention to dance tracks, though, it's not as effective as when she's tearing new orifices in MCs she doesn't like (meaning any who aren't named Roxanne Shanté). But then there's her voice, a high-grade sandpaper wonder, breathlessly racing through her catalog of snaps, like a bratty little sister who's fought her way all the way up to the throne. --Douglas Wolk

Some Old Bullshit

*Est. $7.25 Compare

Back before they were rock stars, entrepreneurs, and spokesmen for a generation, the Beastie Boys were just another band of kids, scrambling for gigs, scrapping for studio time, and just looking for a good time. Sometimes it worked for the Beasties, and sometimes it didn't--Mike D. has said that they broke up at least three times before they ever met up with Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons and made Licensed to Ill. There's a few of the Beasties' hardcore tracks here (the best being "Egg Raid on Mojo"), but for a peek at the future, listen to "Cooky Puss" (the B-Boys' first underground hit--and a disco hit, at that) and the screwy reggae of "Beastie Revolution." Fun trivia fact: Tim Sommer, who can be heard here as the host of WNYU's "Noise the Show," went on to become the A&R rep to sign Hootie & the Blowfish. --Randy Silver Beastie Boys Photos More from Beastie Boys The Sounds of Science Check Your Head IIll Communication Hello Nasty Awesome, I Shot That DVD Video Anthology - Criterion Collection Rare early tracks '81-'84.
